BEST EVAR

I just want to highlight the best thing I've read on LJ all day:

I never even managed to have the intestinal fortitude to write the Vanyel/Lestat bit, and that would have been kind of worth it not because it had any inherent redeeming value (part of the point was the complete lack of merit of the idea, and of course that this is when Lackey was threatening to sue anyone who used her characters and I was pretty sure I could distribute it broadly in an untraceable manner) but because it would have pissed off a bunch of people (who for the most part I would have enjoyed pissing off) and amused me.

Source here: many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tylik for the best belly laugh I've had in a few days.

Mirror neurons control erection response to porn, reported New Scientist, last year.

I'm sorry, I need to go sit on the floor and laugh for a while. It's... just... oh I can't even explain why it's funny, excuse me....

*falls apart*

Ahem.

Anyway.

I notice in the article that they say they ran subjects in the fMRI WHILE showing them either explicit or boring educational videos WHILE having them hooked up to a penile plethysmograph. That is a LOT of equipment to be hooked up to while watching porn! Those were some brave subjects, yo.

PS: Lest you think I'm only reading science trash, I got this article from this lengthy critique of bad social neuro methodology and bad imaging study methodology.

Oh.

Right, that's what the H in Jesus H. Christ stands for.

Haploid!

Thanks, random commenter on some science blog, for causing me to finally realize that.

I no longer hate methylxanthines.

I also had amusing commentary on other phosphodiesterase inhibitors, but it was really just a cover for Viagra jokes, so I'll spare you.

In conclusion, PubChem is way too much fun.

I'm in a CAS E-seminar about new enhancements in the web version of SciFinder.

Their example of a saved search alert is an author search for the author Andrew Maverick.

I... look, I am SO tired of that word even when it appears in a name, okay?

My mind goes back to CAS getting Ralph Regula all fired up to try and stop PubChem a few years ago, and I just have to roll my eyes....

Meanwhile, back in the real world, I was listening to this seminar while answering an email, and I poured myself a cup of coffee from my thermos, and about 2 minutes and half the cup later, I realized I was tasting soap more than coffee. *sigh* I thought I rinsed that thermos out.

Oh, Fox...

Beading

I'm starting this beading kit tonight, just the boring prestringing-beads-on-thread part.

Not cool

Dudes, I am not feeling cool today. I know it's just because [livejournal.com profile] r_ness was here until some godawful hour last night and I didn't get enough sleep, and I felt AWESOME all morning ([livejournal.com profile] r_ness is good for dopamine levels!), but the I crashed, and dudes, I feel SO UNCOOL. Weird that it's how the crash is manifesting, but that's what it feels like.

I'm making collard greens and blasting my Union Station live album, and spending some quality time with a beading pattern that features the words "Invisible Tube Joining!"

No really, they're not speaking LOLcat, it's about joining the two ends of a tube into a ring, invisibly.

Oh, nevermind.

*is still uncool*

Is it bad that I'm also imagining really stalkery Battlestar Galactica fanvids to "Baby, Now That I've Found You?" It's... something about HeadSix and Gaius, I'm sure of it.

They evolved.

They rebelled.

There are many copies.

...you can see where this is going can't you?

A New Crop of Scientists are Using Their Children As Research Subjects.

I took one look at that article and thought, "OHGOD, Deb Roy."

Sure enough, he's mentioned, though he isn't the first one on the list. I... uh... where are the SPOUSES? What are they thinking? I wouldn't want one of these people as my mom or dad. I love _observing_ babies with developmental stuff in mind, but uh, running studies on your own kids? Conflict of fucking interest! It looks like UCSD has some reasonable procedures, but MIT is not being hard enough on Roy's methodology or protective enough of the child, and I'd be creeped out by any friend who actually did this.

Also? The Human Speechome Project is a total... oh, what's the word... humbug! It's a humbug. Yes, I learned to diss Deb Roy from others, but I still think it's a humbug, and I would not want to be his kid.

Dr Lowery's benediction flew right over my head like a flock of birds today. I had NO idea what that was. I have now familiarized myself with something other than the first 4 lines of that hymn. The end, however, I TOTALLY got. AMEN!

For more commentary, [livejournal.com profile] ladysisyphus breaks the opening prayer and the benediction down for us a little more. The comments are good too-- her f-list is good people!

There was a crowd in the courtyard of the library, watching the speech. There was applause at various points.

There is still PBS streaming at my desk. I just got teary when they did a close-up of the presidential seal on one of the helicopters.

OMG Jill Biden is wearing sexy boots!

I'm watching http://wgby.org/inauguration2009/index.html and it is AWESOME. (I'm also watching MSNBC with the sound off on my other computer.)

You can also get that info at http://www.pbs.org/vote2008/livestream/ which requires an applet but is also awesome. You can hear David Brooks gasp and say "oh WOW" every time they show a shot of the crowd, which is, of course, stupendous.

At work, we have CNN in the courtyard, MSNBC streaming down in the art department, and I forget what network streaming in the MEWS.

I love my workplace. I love this day.

And the "Obama! Obama!" cheers start up as I send this post....

The video some of you linked to earlier today got taken down, but here's another copy, from German TV?

I was fine until they showed how big this crowd was that was singing along. I've been there when it was packed for July 4th, but it wasn't THAT packed. Admittedly I cry over everything nowadays, but that got me.

+1 for random footage of George Lucas singing along, too.

Give me an alternative to the yuck that has been much of this weekend (my apologies to those of you who are working today-- at least it's a holiday, I'm not sure I could have gone today, regardless).

How are you going to observe or attend the inauguration tomorrow? I will be at work, but I'm expecting to have it streaming from WGBY at my desk, and hopefully I'll get the chance to check out the CNN/Microsoft "The Moment" photocollage thing when it's up, too. They're aiming to make it the most documented moment in history. Hey, if they can beat 9/11, go them.

Are there other forms of media coverage y'all would recommend?

I just watched the Doctor Who Christmas episode and it made me cry, like, a lot.

I thought it was just making me like everyone else, the way Zoloft made me cry less. Now I'm not so sure that _this_ isn't normal, and the Zoloft was making me weirdly stony. I... dunno that I like either.

Also? I _knew_ Miss Hartigan looked familiar! My mom and my brother MUST see this ASAP, because they like Dervla Kirwan so much! AAAAAAA! (Dervla Kirwan is the bestest name ever.) When I realized where I knew her from I kinda did the full-blown screaming and flapping thing. I love how Doctor Who makes me do that so much. No, we're not typecasting Dervla Kirwan as independent-minded women at ALL, noooo!

Today: up at 10:30.

Kitchen: still clean! As predicted, cleaning the kitchen made me feel less like I was slowly going crazy. It also makes me want to cook, and to that end, last night I made broccoli soup, and right now I'm baking whole wheat bread. After this? Quite possibly, there will be black beans in the slow cooker, and maybe this time I won't make the n00b error of putting lemon juice in BEFORE cooking (the beans won't soften in the presence of acid).

Self-review document: working on it still makes me hunch my shoulders up around my ears, but I'm working on it. 2 paragraphs have been written today. I'll give it a good try and then go do something silly.

So apparently the world was _not_ actually falling apart the way it felt like it was, yesterday. At least it looks like I will make it until Tuesday....

The smell of whole wheat bread helps too. So does fresh snow, which looks really really pretty outside!

ETA: The hollow thump of a fresh hot loaf of bread helps SO MUCH. I may start doing this more often!
