Oh, my brain.
Jan. 15th, 2009 12:06 pmIt seems to have serious autocomplete problems with anyone named Denise. WTF, brain?
Also, it now associates Sara Bareilles with the "Breaking a Social Norm" assignment from social psych in college. It makes sense in my head! It's a social norm to have a love song on every album, right? (Yeah, I know, marketing != social norms, but do you see how they're related?)
Yeah.
Oh, my brain. Back to work, my brain, you silly thing. And yes I'll get you food soon.

Doing my part for science!
Jan. 15th, 2009 12:12 pmI just ordered "Autism's False Prophets" for the collection at work. We'll see how long it lasts on the new book shelves before it gets stolen/destroyed.
Why yes, the discussion we had at the workshop yesterday about accepted science, fringe science, and denialism DID fire me up, why?
For my part, I advocated for respectful treatment of everyone who comes to us with an information need, no matter how odd it seems to us personally, even if that makes us need to go read Denialism Blog afterwards and curse loudly. It doesn't mean denying the evidence you find in your searching during that interaction, but respect for the information seeker is important even when-- perhaps even moreso when-- you're dealing with someone who is clinging to fringe science in order to cope with a huge personal tragedy. I like to try to apply that standard to everyone whether I think they're just being a crank or not, because how the hell am I to determine what underlying problem is making someone act like a crank? I'm really not.
PS: And if I can't manage respect, hey, maybe I'll aim for respectful insolence? It's anti-crackpot day here at digitalemur.livejournal.com. I don't think I've pissed off any of my f-list YET, but the day is young!

You know, when
catinthehat sent me footage of the plane rescue going on in the Hudson this afternoon, I said "yeah, we're watching it too."
It didn't strike me until 6 pm that I should have said, "You know, that pilot deserves a medal for not bringing it down RIGHT ON YOUR OFFICE." Sorry, chica, I didn't know _where_ in the river it went down, nor did I think to ask at the time. *shudder*
Last night as we took off from Midway, I thought, "I wish they hadn't been publicizing that there have been no commercial airline fatalities in this country for 2 years. It's like jinxing us." May it continue to be true.

Gets better every time
Jan. 15th, 2009 09:59 pmI think this is only the second time I've watched The Princess Diaries.
I keep noticing new things. It's such a deliberately corny movie in some ways, but they put so much thought into the little details.
Of course, when I'm this tired, every little thing about it makes me cry, from the way Anne Hathaway looks a lot like Red, to the way Julie Andrews is just made of awesome.
Also, this time? I realized that Joe and The Queen are Simon Ilyan and Alys Vorpatril. They totally are!
I'm such a sucker. This movie is so much fun.
